Portland State University has released the names of two campus police officers involved in a deadly shooting Friday morning.
Shawn McKenzie is a campus police officer and has been with the department since 2016, PSU said. McKenzie has been a non-sworn officer of PSU’s Campus Public Safety Office since 2002, the university confirms.
James Dewey, the second officer involved in the shooting, has also been with the department since 2016. Dewey has been a non-sworn officer of PSU’s Campus Public Safety Office since 2014.
Both officers have been placed on administrative leave, per university policy. PSU said it will not release any additional information about the shooting at this time.
The shooting early Friday morning occurred on a sidewalk on Southwest College Street between Southwest 6th Avenue and Southwest Broadway near the university’s downtown campus.
One person, an adult man, was killed, law enforcement confirms. The name of the man has not been released.
McKenzie and Dewey were responding to a disturbance call around 1:30 a.m. when the shooting occurred. Shots were fired and emergency medical crews were immediately called to the area, but the suspect died at the scene, police said.
Authorities haven't released further information about what led up to the shooting.
Witnesses captured the shooting and the moments leading up to it on video. One video appears to show a brawl between a group of people on the sidewalk.
A man involved in the brawl is seen carrying a pistol in a holster on his hip. Officers haven't said if that man or the gun are connected to the shooting.
