Police are continuing to an investigate an early morning officer-involved shooting that resulted in one man killed.

The shooting, which involved campus police officers from Portland State University, happened on a sidewalk on SW College St., between SW 6th Ave. and SW Broadway, near the university’s downtown campus.

According to police, PSU officers responded to a “disturbance” call around 1:30 a.m. and later located an adult man who was involved, currently identified by Portland Police only as a “suspect”.

Shots were fired and emergency medical crews were immediately called to the area, but the suspect died at the scene, police said.

Witness videos shared with FOX 12 captured the shooting and the moments leading up to it.

One video appears to show a brawl between a group of people on the sidewalk.

“It started a little earlier in the night and it led up to yelling across streets,” said witness Keyaira Smith. “And then, from there, it just kind of took a turn from the worst.”

One of the men in the brawl, whose involvement appears to primarily be him attempting to hold back his friend, is seen carrying a pistol in a holster on his hip.

Police have not confirmed if that man, or the gun, played a role in the shooting.

In a second video, a person - presumed to be a police officer - is heard yelling “drop the gun” before shots are fired.

“He had fallen and hit the ground, and you hear the pistol hit the ground, and from there I didn’t see if it had fallen out of his pocket – they said it fell out of his pocket, and that he picked it back up,” Smith said.

So far, police have not named the PSU officers who were involved in the shooting and why shots were fired.

PSU said that per PSU policy two officers have been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.
